The Election Process

In Bare Book, Grades 1 - 5, Junior High School

Students make their own guide to the Election Process

Level: Grades 5-6
Originated by: Treetop Publishing

The whole election process can be confusing for students as well as some adults. Have them make their own guide so they will understand a little more about it. Chapters can be made in the book for each level of government, or a book could be made for each level, depending on how detailed the report should be.

Assign a list of words to be included in the book for a glossary. The glossary page could be computer-generated and pasted into the last pages of the book. You may even find the students using the glossary as they are working on the book.

Depending on how detailed your assignment will be, here are some sample writing topics:

  • What is the job description of the President?
  • What are the requirements to run for the Presidential Office?
  • What are Political Parties?
  • What is the job description of the Vice President?
  • How is the Vice President elected?
  • What is a Primary Election?
  • Explain how and why President-Elects campaign.
  • What is a debate, and why do opponents do it?
  • Explain Congressional Districts.
  • Who can vote and how can you register?
  • How are the votes counted?
  • What is the Electoral College?

Allow a few pages in the back of the book for the author to include personal insight about the presidency, and possibly a comment on what they would do if they were president.
