I have been "publishing" books with children for 25+ years, initially doing our own binding in the style of the Written and Illustrated By... program by Melton, Landmark Publishers. I do not recall exactly when or how I first came across one of your early catalogs, though I do know it was in the mid to late 1980's. The first year we used your hard copy books was a thrill for children and us, children because the books felt more "real" especially as we continued making book jackets for them, us because the time saved from hand sewing, etc. provided the time we were craving for more editing conferences, story development, etc. The rest is history, my classes have published books for our school library every year since - with the bare book original product and erasable crayons - and have had subsets selected for display in the local art gallery. I am teaching first grade this year, and my most recent order was to sample a couple smaller versions and check which these very young authors are drawn to most. So far it looks like the smaller version of the original product is a hit, although the comic book format has intrigued several. Our non-profit organization uses volunteers to help adults improve their English, reading and writing skills. I was introduced to the product about 5 years ago when I first started teaching from a 3rd grade teacher. I've ordered the same book almost every year and have used it in different ways. My first year we used it as a study book for 8th grade confirmation. The students had to record prayers, rosary information, acts of mercy, etc. The following couple years (8th grade Language Arts), students created their own stories based on writing stories for The Mystery of Harris Burdick by Chris Van Allsburg. This year my Seniors are creating their own version of The House on Mango Street with illustrations or pictures. They are quite excited! They love the plastic covers, too! This was the first year that I ordered these. I will no doubt continue ordering from Bare Books in the future. The kids love it at any grade. I had high school students write their own children's stories. This time I ordered for family members that like to draw and had drawing supplies on their Christmas list so I thought to order from your company because their drawings become keepsakes in a hard cover book--and you offer reasonably priced products! We hold a “Family Reading Night” each school year during the week of our Scholastic book fair. We are actually holding this event tonight. I am a member of our Reading Committee, and we were brainstorming ideas to get families involved in an activity relating to reading. We decided we wanted to find a way for families to make books – whether they were story books, books like photo albums, etc. We looked for products that would allow us to do this with minimal construction. We found a few products, but liked the way Bare Books looked on the website. I ordered a small order a few months ago to see what they were like, and was very pleased with my purchase. My kids at home have made them into storybooks (they are quite the little authors). One will write; the other illustrates. They have created wonderful pieces that we will treasure forever. We did not get the response we were looking for (we issued an RSVP request from families that wanted to make a book), but I think once people see what they are tonight, next year they will be sure to get in on the activity.
